School Meals:  Families may pre-pay for meals up to a year in advance. For pre-payments of one month or more, discounts are available.  Reduced price meals also may be purchased long-term, but discounts do not apply

Reduced price and/or free meal qualification is based on gross monthly income and family size.  A free and reduced priced meal application may be obtained by calling (352) 797-7028 or seeing the Cafeteria Manager at any school.

YMCA Prime Time - The Hernando County YMCA offers before and after school child care at the ten Hernando County elementary schools.  The program is called Prime Time.  It is also available on holidays, Professional days and during winter and spring breaks.   This is for children age 4 - 12.  Contact the YMCA for the Registration Fee per family.   Financial aid is available to those who qualify.

The Boys & Girls Club in Spring Hill offer after-school care and homework assistance to children ages 10 to 17 years old at their club on Applegate Drive.  The after school program is available to children from West Side Elementary, Chocachatti Elementary, Deltona Elementary, Fox Chapel Middle School, Powell Middle School and Springstead High School.   Transportation will be arranged via school bus from those schools.  The before school program is only offered to children from West Side Elementary due to the close proximity of the school.    There is a non-refundable registration fee  of $25 per family that will allow the child to participate in activities through the entire school year, then the daily/weekly fees are payable as follow:

Home Schooling: Those interested in educating their children at home may wish to contact a network of Hernando County's home school families known as Home Circle.  They meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. from August through May.  An orientation for new home school parents begins at 6:15 p.m. prior to the regular meeting.   Meetings are held at:

The Hernando County School Board requires certain inoculations for children entering into the Hernando County School system.    

Grades K-2:  Measles vaccine (second dose, preferably MMR); hepatitis B series (three doses over a six-month period); DTP (four or five doses required)' polio (three or four doses required); Pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first-grade students must have the varicella vaccine or documentation of past chicken pox. 

Grades 3-6:  Measles vaccine (second dose, preferably MMR); DTP (four or five doses required); polio (three or four doses required). Sixth-graders must have begun the hepatitis B series by October.

Grades 7-11:  Tetanus-diptheria (TD) booster; measles vaccine (second dose, preferably MMR); hepatitis B series (three doses given over a six-month period).
